When Activision announced their IWNet matchmaking service will replace dedicated servers for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2, it predictably angered a lot of PC gamers. But apparently when you're dealing with what's already been anointed as the likely-to-be best-selling game of the year, angering some of your customers isn't too much to worry about. "We're, of course, watching this very carefully and paying attention to it," said president Mike Griffith during an earnings call (via Kotaku), in response to a question about whether the backlash could affect sales. "But we're not overly concerned about it."
Why? As Griffith explains, he's confident the IWNet service will add enough benefits to overcome the backlash. "One of the problems with our PC SKUs in the past is that it has not been as friendly a consumer experience in terms of matchmaking and online play as the consoles have allowed it to be," Griffith said. "Our solution here improves that consumer experience overall by a significant margin. And so we think that the benefits we will see are going to far outweigh any negatives that seem to be surfacing."
So in other words, Activision is betting that the number of new people who will now play the game with the easier matchmaking service will outweigh the number of people who won't due to a lack of dedicated servers. Sorry, old-school PC gamers, but while that may be a stone-cold business calculation, it's probably not an incorrect one.
Well hey, hopefully Activision will get their heads outta their asses when they realize nobody buys the PC version.
Anyways, I'd like to know where they get more money from, because if they get enough money from the console versions, they probably couldn't give less of a fuck for the PC sales.
Hopefully your right about it being "All about the money", because if it really is, they would see that they're just losing money, even if they do get a shit load from the console sales. Lock, eh?
Actually despite my better judgement... I bought MW2... game play is very nice... graphics pretty incredable... Not sure how the group dynamics will work.. but private games are possible... I started a {SA}StayAliveTactical group at http://steamcommunity.com/groups/stayalivetactical and IF you should buy the game... look for me and join the goup.. my tag is RustyTank in the game -email- ... you can add me as a friend ... A few of us should give it a try... then if not... it won't be the worst $60 i ever spent.
I am downloading via steam as we speak. I would love to play with you guys if you can take the gamble. Like RT, i have been reading that the benefits outweigh modded servers and host advantage.
I look forward to playing with Dan and RT and hopefully the rest of you, as I kind of miss you bastards.
